!!!

i’ve been back in hangzhou for a few weeks now and the difference since 2015 is kind of insane. watching a city change over a decade is one thing but in china it’s just on a completely different scale

the cultivated west lakexihu used to feel like this balance between nature and history now it leans way more toward curated. it still looks clean almost too clean but some of the natural feel is gone. what stood out more was the crowd shift it used to feel mixed with tourists everywhere now it feels way more local

the gold standard of railchina’s high speed rail is still ridiculous and hangzhou west station changes a lot. it takes pressure off the older stations and suddenly places that felt out of the way are actually connected

business class was the real highlight though. 239 rmb for a 90 minute ride from shanghai and it felt closer to a flight than a train. semi enclosed seat basically a small private space you can fully recline in. they hand you slippers eye mask snacks nuts jerky the whole thing. it’s the kind of system that makes going back to the us feel like a downgrade

the price of progress homogenizationthe downside is everything starting to look the same. hangzhou could pass for shanghai or beijing in certain areas. a lot of new districts blur together and you lose that sense of where you actually are

final thoughtseven with that sameness the quality of life here is hard to ignore. heated floors good interiors cost of living that still makes sense. it’s just easy to live here. hangzhou figured out how to be comfortable and efficient even if it lost some of its older character in the process
